When Unesco releases rankings of the happiest nations, somehow Puerto Rico makes it on top often. Why I couldn't tell until I spent some quality time among the most cheerful, beautiful and social people in the world.
We flew over to San Juan and took a cab to Old San Juan where we were to stay for 2 nights at the beautiful Gallery Inn. Never stayed in the more classy place btw - that's if you like antiques and interior design. We strolled the streets every night, visited endless bars, clubs and restaurants, met lots of young people having good times (drinking age of 16 attracts a lot of Americans to Puerto Rico).
Everything was so tranquil. The rumors that it's not safe are completely false. There is a cop on every corner. Even the nothern part, where some would consider the 'Old San Juan ghetto' to be are full of poor, happy people getting by. People sing aloud at red lights in their cars, occasionally pull out instruments on public transportation, kids take off their uniforms and dip in on to beach after school, ... great cigar smoke in the air, excellent rums dirt cheap in the grocery stores, even the dogs are happy as you can tell from the pics.
If anyone haven't been yet, definitely go. You'll enjoy. Jet Blue flies direct from the East Coast. Getting more expensive - used to be that you could go for $50 each way/pp, but still worth it. Highly recommended!!!
